We're proud to provide your drinking water
Water is an essential part of life. We’re incredibly proud of the role we play in treating and transporting clean and safe drinking water to your homes and businesses. It’s a lifeline service that supports the health, wellbeing and future of our communities.
Every day we supply about 27 million litres of water to people in Waipā, Waitomo and South Waikato.

Before it reaches your tap
Before water reaches your tap, our team puts it through a series of carefully controlled treatment steps designed to remove dirt, germs, chemicals, and anything else that shouldn’t be in your drinking water.
When it leaves the treatment plant, it makes its way to your home via our vast network of pipes, pump stations and water storage reservoirs.
We follow the requirements outlined in Taumata Arowai’s Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules 2022 to ensure the water we supply is safe to drink.
About our water sources
When all six district councils have transitioned their services to us, we’ll look after 36 water treatment plants. These plants treat water from springs, underground aquifers, lakes and rivers.
The level of treatment varies depending on the source. Groundwater abstracted from deep aquifers typically requires only a low-level of treatment, because the raw water contains very little bacteria (if any) and is very clear. Water abstracted from rivers, however, is exposed to contaminants from activities like farming, and requires a much higher level of treatment.

How we treat your water
While each treatment plant is different, the water may go through these key stages:
