The Tīrau Watermain Upgrade Project reached a major milestone last week with the final replacement pipe officially going live, securing a more reliable water supply for the township.
The project was a successful collaborative effort. South Waikato District Council passed the initiative over to the newly established council-controlled organisation, Waikato Waters for completion last month.
The new watermain is now fully operational and contractors are currently on-site completing final reinstatement work and tidy-ups.
Waikato Waters chief operations officer Tom Wallace says as it was one of the first projects delivered by the new organisation, establishing strong community trust was a top priority.
"We were committed to understanding the community's needs and planned our water shutdown work around these," Wallace says.
The Waikato Waters operations team and contractors worked hard to minimise water disruptions to the Tīrau township. Work was completed outside of peak hours wherever possible, with special consideration given to the school holidays and the township's busy tourism and shopping periods.
Following the success in Tīrau, Waikato Waters is maintaining its momentum across the South Waikato District. The organisation is scheduled to begin another major watermain upgrade project in Putāruru next month to replace ageing infrastructure.
